Bollywood romantic comedies have beautifully taught the hopeless romantic inside all of us to recognise this magical feeling as true love. A true cinema fan might proudly declare that we live only once, we die only once, we marry only once, and true love also happens just once.

Breaking the Bollywood Myth

However, researchers decided to find out if this famous cinematic philosophy is actually true in the real world. A detailed study conducted by the Kinsey Institute and published in the journal Interpersona decided to put a real number on this beautiful emotion. The research team surveyed over ten thousand single adults between the ages of eighteen and ninety-nine across the United States. They asked these participants a very simple yet deep question about how many times they had been passionately in love during their entire lifetime.

The final answer completely shattered the popular movie myth. People reported falling passionately in love an average of twice in their lifetime, or 2.05 times to be exact. The numbers tell a truly fascinating story about human relationships. About 14% of the participants said they had never experienced passionate love at all. Meanwhile, 28% reported feeling it just once. The largest group, making up 30% of the total, said they had been passionately in love twice. 17% experienced it 3 times, and 11% claimed to have fallen in love 4 or more times.

The Psychology of Romance

This psychological phenomenon aligns perfectly with Robert Sternberg and his famous Triangular Theory of Love from the year nineteen eighty-six. His theory states that romantic connections are built upon three essential pillars, which are passion, intimacy, and commitment. Passionate love can easily arise multiple times across a lifespan, depending entirely upon individual differences and various social factors. Dr Amanda Gesselman, a lead scientist at the Kinsey Institute, explained that while people talk about falling in love all the time, this was the first major study to actually track how often it happens.

A Universal Human Language

Interestingly, this deep emotion is a highly universal language. The study found very little difference across various sexual orientations. Age does play a significant role, as older participants naturally reported slightly more romantic experiences than younger ones. This beautifully proves that the possibility of falling deeply in love does not simply expire after your twenties. So, if you ever feel guilty about moving on from your very first love, science gives you the perfect reason to open your heart again. Just like the famous characters in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a beautiful second chance at romance might be waiting right around the corner.
